  • Can meclizine cause insomnia once and sleepiness the next time
(Asked by a 58 year old woman who has Somnolence, Insomnia, and takes Meclizine)
I took Meclizine one night (as advised by pharmacist; she said it causes drowsiness), after experiencing my first attack of vertigo. It kept me awake almost all night. A couple weeks later, as I was getting ready for a special school event for my daughter, I thought another vertigo attack was coming on. Since the Meclizine didn't make me sleepy the first time but instead had the opposite effect, I thought it would be ok to take it (this was an evening event with a meal). After eating, I began to get very sleepy and my face almost fell in my plate.

  • Metoprolol tartate* bad side effects
(Posted by a 63 year old woman who has SVT, and takes Metoprolol Tartrate)
This drug caused me to gain 25 pounds, it caused depression, exhaustion, vivid dreams, joint pain, personality changes, I walk/jog frequently and could no longer jog at all. At one point I had vision problems, things would "jump" so badly that I couldn't drive (I am not sure what that was, they said whatever it was it was not my eyes. Confusion, memory problems. I think my infrequent SVTs were made worse. It made my life a living hell. My children finally said that if I didn't do something they would! I found a new Dr. and I was taken off of it and a review of all my original cardiac tests came back totally normal and I didn't need it anyway. And the only way I would ever take this medicine is if it were a last resort. There are other drugs that would have worked that have a lot less side effects. A cardiac nurse told me that Metoprolol is one of the worst for side effects. My husband has serious heart issues and was put on this med..I have noticed a lot of the same changes in him and I will work to have them change his medication also.
  • Gabapentin made me comatose
(Posted by a 69 year old woman who has Somnolence, and takes Neurontin, Gabapentin)
I took Neurontin, and then its generic, Neurontin, for about five years. It was prescribed for chronic pain. I found it ineffective, but kept being told it was a good drug, quite benign, and was probably benefiting me more than I realized. I did NOT realize that toward the end of the five-year period I was sinking into somnolence. On some days I simply didn't bother with the drug, because I felt it was ineffective, but on others I followed doctor's orders. Thus my condition varied depending on whether I'd actually ingested the drug. My condition came to a crisis when my husband called me from work, and found me incoherent. He took me to the ER, but I remember nothing about it. Apparently I was pleasant during admission, but clearly confused (I thought we had two presidents -- probably conflating George Bush with George W. Bush.) By the time doctors saw me, I was comatose. The physicians suspected morphine intoxication, as I was a chronic-pain patient. They didn't know what to do and thought I was dying. My husband told them the name of my pain- management doctor, who immediately diagnosed the problem. My kidneys were shutting down. He pointed to my creatines, which were off the chart. He told the other doctors to hydrate me fully, and leave me alone -- that I would be fine. I awoke about 10 hours later in intensive care. A nurse asked me if I knew where I was, and I replied I knew I was in the hospital but didn't know why. I was discharged the next morning, and had no lasting effects from the drug.
  • Profolol side effects-will not use again
(Posted by a 70 year old woman who has Unable To Walk Without Holding Onto Walls, Sleepy, Lightheadedness - Dizzy, Disoriented)
It is slightly more than 24 hours since profolol alone was given to me for a colonoscopy and endoscopy. I woke up quickly but very sleepy and tired. Forced to get in wheelchair and leave asap. Slept when I got home all night. The next day was very disoriented, lightheaded when I sat up or got up and unable to walk without feeling so dizzy and unable to walk straight that I was fearful I would fall without assistance. Halo affect in front of my eyes and unable physically to do anything. Just wanted to sleep and lie down. Not depressed but my body just did not want to function and could not function when I stood up. Very scary. Hoping will be gone after 48 hours.
  • Metoprolol & lisinopril, vs. carvedilol, lisinopril and warfarin
(Posted by a 44 year old woman who has Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy, Pulmonary Embolisms, Transient Ischemic Attacks, and takes Lisinopril, Carvedilol, Warfarin Sodium, Metoprolol Tartrate)
Lisinopril 25mg provokes horrific depression, despair, inability to navigate back to upbeat, creative state and fear for survival. Dizziness, crippling vertigo, etc every time I move from rest. Reducing dose to 2.5mg makes side effects tolerable, with no noticeable change in therapeutic effect.

Carvedilol caused renal failure, edema, coughing, panic-inducing painful allergic skin rashes, necrosis, healing took weeks where it had taken a day or less. Unable to walk up or odnw stairs unaided. Fell a lot Vision blurred, especially at night and when seeking perspective : driving.

Warfarin made me feel like my body was made up of burdens foreign matter. Contraindicated diet was a blow to my post-domestic-violence, with sexual assaults, fragile ego, and capped the hopelessness triune of impacts.

Metoprolol has caused awful heartburn since the first dose, with bloating and gas. Heartburn begins 12hrs after eating, very late at night. It keeps me from most activities. Very painful. Digestive upset I thought was from IV radiation / imaging seems to be metoprolol's doing.
  • Ear popping and swishing
(Posted by a 73 year old man who has Heart Disease Congenital, Tinnitus, and takes Metoprolol Tartrate, Aspirin, Chlorpheniramine Maleate)
I had been taking blood thinners and 81 mgs. aspirin for about a year after heart surgery. I then stopped taking the blood thinner and my cardiologist recommended and adult aspirin (325mgs.)

a few days later I started to experience a popping and swishing in my ears along with waves of dizziness. This happened most often when I bent over but could also happen when I was just sitting. I hoped these symptoms would go away in time as I really wanted to take the aspirin. It didn't get better so I discussed it with my cardiologist who told me to go back to the baby aspirin (81mgs.) The condition improved dramatically within a week but did not resolve completely. Over the past 5 months it is slowly improving until I now only have the popping/swishing/dizzy occasionally. I am hoping the problem will completely resolve in time.
