I have Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (facial nerve condition) and so I am taking Gabapentin 100mg twice a day. I started in October 2013 and since then I have been averaging a Urinary Tract Infection every 6 weeks. Once our doctor friend reviewed my medications, he suspected that Gabapentin may be the cause. Recently, the UTI's have been severe and strong medication (Leviquor) has been prescribed. The side effects are not fun. I am trying to get to the bottom of this and welcome the group to share their experiences. Has anyone stopped Gabapentin and found the UTI's also stopped?
I am not an ALS patient myself, but I lost my son's father (who was only 43 yrs. old) to ALS two years ago. He had been taking an anti-anxiety medication (not sure which one) for a few years, when he was first diagnosed. In fact, at first his doctors thought his symptoms were caused by the anti-anxiety meds he was on. At that time, it did cross my mind that the medication could actually be linked to his fate, but the thought passed. I was shocked when I found the information on this site today; and angry if this is what caused his horrible death. His young son is left to deal with the fear of his future, as we don't know if this disease was caused by a family gene. I would like to know if this medication was the cause so I could warn my son and give him some relief in knowing this disease may be preventable.
